Twisted Language

”Images are produced within dynamics of social power and ideology” as Sturken states. Appropriation in art, one of the characteristic practices of postmodernism, is used to comment on aspects of culture and society. According to Sturken irony and the awareness of the impact of low or popular culture are reflected in postmodern art.  An artwork becomes a powerful statement of approval or disapproval of certain ideologies, myths, stereotypical behaviours and viewpoints.

Leigh Clarke’s series of works entitled ‘Good News out of Bad News’ appropriate the media style and tactics. The artworks are placed in familiar context which emphasizes their meaning and broadens their accessibility. Due to the twisted language of media headlines the works connote a negative comment on the convention of information selling and the society the product is offered to.
